Tale of the Battle of Ellendore, February 17th, 2021
As you may recall from the Tale of the Magic Cube, the Elves of The Emerald Dragon, riding their fearsome Dragons, had rescued the ill-fated band of adventuring Wizards of the Cypher Guild from their imprisonment within the fabled Magic Cube.
The journey home was long and arduous, even for the great flying Emerald Dragons, who were no strangers to hardships, having been raised in the jagged-edged stone hills of Polygon, a place where spine tingling tales are born from. After many days of travel in the sky, and many nights shared around the camp fire, the Elven rescuers recognized the ancient magic of the Cube had given the Wizards new, unimaginable powers, and this was of great concern.
While trapped in the Cube for countless moons, the Wizards were changed by the ancient magic that held them. They grew hungry for conquest, expansion, and glorious self-enrichment. The Elves knew if they returned the Wizards to their land of Ethereum, they would overpower the elders of the Cypher Guild, slowly devouring the entire Kingdom, and, soon after, all the neighboring lands.
Recognizing the danger, the Elves stopped in the small valley of Ellendore for a multi week respite to formulate a strategy. Messages went out to the neighboring kingdoms, calling upon them to gather their strongest hands and send them, at once, to help the Elven cause. The kingdom of Axioms received the Elves plea for aid at daybreak, and was first to respond. The seasoned General Bloksus gathered 50 thousand $AXI strong, and, joined by their powerful leader, Sorcerer Leaf, named for his magic that appears as if to dance like a leaf on the wind, were on the march to Ellendore.
Meanwhile back at camp, as the days of recuperation passed, the Wizards grew restless, and the Elves more apprehensive. As the old saying goes, idle hands are the devil’s plaything, and nothing west of the Blockchain Mountains could have been truer. The Wizards, having been told the Emerald Dragons needed another day or two of rest, started experimenting with their newly embodied ancient magic. The Elves could only watch in anxious dread as the Wizards began to practice and hone their powers.
They practiced the ancient locking spell that had trapped them. The Wizards worked themselves into a frenzy, binding, sealing: locking everything in sight. A stone the size of a man’s fist held trapped in mid-air is a bewildering thing to see, but more remarkable were the floating pools of water they had learned to suspend in midair, locked in space and time. Hovering above the ground, these pools of still water, free from the relentless torture of gravity, were absolutely mesmerizing, even to the Elves watching from afar.
Things quickly got more interesting when the Wizards worked as one, drawing together their small floating pools, to form a large circular hovering pool of water, that they then turned up on end. As if a tranquil reflecting pool had been stood on edge; the wizards gazed into their creation, like a hypnotized fair maiden captivated by her chamber mirror.
The Wizards continued to work their magic on the floating pool that now started to take on the angular shape of doorway. So focused were they, that they did not hear the low rumble of the first approaching army, or see the Elves readying their dragons for flight.
Many armies were on the march to aid the troop of Elves who had beckoned them to Ellendore. The first to arrive just before sunset was the 50 thousand strong from Axioms, who were halfway into the valley, when the Wizards were startled by what was approaching behind them. The wizards knew this was no welcome home party, this was no parade to celebrate their safe return. They knew the Elves must have sensed danger and were terrified of the power they now possessed. This was to be some kind of battle.
There was a quiet moment, a standoff, the army of fifty thousand staring across a hundred yards of meadow, as the wizards gathered in a defensive position around their reflective gateway. Then, all at once, the silence was broken by the flaming roar of an Emerald Dragon.
The warriors began to charge across the fields of sweet grass and buttercups, running at full speed, while the dragons took to the air giving the Elves the advantage of flight. Quickly, the Wizards shouted commands at each other, and together, they began to cast a powerful energy spell. The very grounds around them seemed to tremble, and in the clear sky above them formed a dark and formidable cloud. With arms outstretched as if to command the heavens to grant them the power of the deities, the Wizards, in unison, clapped their hands together and released a wave of energy. It was though a lightning bolt had taking the form of an ocean wave, and been launched towards the brave warriors charging towards them.
The energy blast never reached its intended target. Instead, it was intercepted by shimmering, magical beams of light, that appeared to have the shape of a flock of pure white birds. The birds, themselves made of magic, phased in and out of reality, disrupting the energy blast, which resulted in it scorching the ground just twenty meters away from the army, dissipating into a harmless mist of vapor. The Wizards were dumbfounded, and, for a moment, panic shown on their faces. For they realized what had happened when they saw a lone figure standing at the edge of the nearby forest.
They recognized him as the great Sorcerer Leaf of Axioms. He had predicted the Wizards’ spell, and cast his own to counter it. “Foolishness!” he muttered to himself, “such a predictable spell!” Our soldiers will be on top of you in seconds, and you’ll be bound in chains in a blink of an eye, he confidently thought to himself.
The Wizards quickly shouted one more command, as the hoard was practically in spitting distance. And with that command, the Wizards, working together, cast an ancient spell learned from the Magic Cube, like the one they had just been practicing. All fifty thousand warriors from Axioms suddenly could no longer feel the ground beneath their feet, as they began to rise up into the air. Gravity no longer held them. No longer were they bound the forces of nature. The Wizards, using tremendous focus and concertation, lifted the army of Axioms high into the air. As high as a tree top, the army floated, awestruck, gripped in fear, as a moment of silence overtook the valley of Ellendore, not even nature herself dared make a peep. The only sounds were those of intense struggle coming from the Wizards who could contain the army floating no longer, and suddenly, the soldiers were all dropped. The soldiers of Axioms came crashing down, as gravity regained its hold on them, and they violently returned to ground. Some broke bones, some twisted ankles, most had the wind and, for the moment, the fight knocked out of them.
Drained, but not exhausted, and realizing the Dragons were readying themselves for their next assault, the Wizards realized they would need to regroup and organize a counter offensive. Trapped in a magic cube and then living on Elven leaves and berries, they simply did not have the stamina to fight off the Dragons, the Elves, and the great Sorcerer of Axioms. They quickly turned towards the floating liquid doorway behind them, and without hesitation, they leapt into it, leaving behind the valley of Ellendore, the land of Ethereum, and the Kingdom of Axioms. All of it now behind them. The warriors regaining their breath and balance, to their amazement, the Wizards just simply vanished into what looked like a floating water doorway and out of sight.
Thousands of men gathered around the hovering pool, weapons drawn at the ready for whatever may come back through. Without fear, the Sorcerer of $AXI approached the portal and did something the warriors thought quite odd, he sat down, legs crossed, and closed his eyes just inches away, facing the portal.
Minutes passed by that seemed like hours. Hours passed by that seemed as if years. And then, a flow of green mist began to emanate from the Portal, engulfing and surrounding the Sorcerer, even appearing to enter him.
Those around him watched in trepidation, mystified by the magic happening before them. The green mist began to dissipate and a silhouette of not one, but two images could be seen. The Sorcerer was there, not once, but twice!
The soldiers were besides themselves in amazement. How could this be, how could there now be two where there was once one? Before they could even utter a word or ask the Sorcerer to explain, the twin sorcerer stood up, found and mounted upon the nearest horse, and rode into the portal, simply disappearing.
Stunned for a moment by all who had witnessed, the remaining Sorcerer spoke, “We shall not allow such treachery the Wizards have caused to ravage any land, whether our own, or other! I have absorbed some of ancient magic from the Cube, and it has given me the strength to empower us all. These magics effect us all differently, as you have seen it has given me the power of duplication!
I can see through my twin’s eyes. He has crossed the portal into the unexplored Smartlands of Binance! No Wizards are in sight, I can assure you we can cross safely, make camp, and prepare for the chase.
Whom here is brave enough to lead your armies through the Portal with me to venture these brave new lands! Whom shall give chase to the Wizards with at least 50,000 strong? If you take up the banner with me, I promise you riches and glory! For I shall give you the same strength and power I have bestowed upon myself, and you shall have your army duplicated to journey onward. Pass through the portal as my twin has done, and we shall challenge the Wizards together. But beware! This portal is one-directional, sealed on the other side with the Magic Cube’s energy. Those daring to pass through may not return, and must prepare for the most epic adventure of their lives!”
Many from the land of Axioms took up arms to answer the call. Yet the Elves and Dragons remained. For they noticed something others had not, which gave them pause. The twin of the Sorcerer, just before crossing the threshold of the Portal looked back, and for just a moment, they saw a hint of a green glow in his eyes. The very same glow the Wizards possessed.
The question remains:
What awaits on the other side?
